What a turnout from our Kiwanis Club of Poway—18 members strong! It seems no one had anything better to do… except have an absolute blast supporting the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society and the Memorial Day tribute!
While the crowds were lighter this year, the event was still a huge success, filled with delicious pancakes, great company, and plenty of laughs. Speaking of laughs, John Couvrette put on quite the show, flipping four pancakes at once—someone tell John Lingham at OPH he’s got competition!
A big shout-out to Johnny Pancake Lingham for donating three buckets of batter, ensuring our grill-on-wheels kept everyone well-fed. Another huge thanks to Bob Beavers and Lee Freeman for helping with gear transfer and staging the day before.
Kiwanians who made the day unforgettable: Early risers—Jim McGuire & Mike Celeste (at daybreak!)
The amazing team—Neil Tarzy, Mike Boyer, Nancy Polston, Jeff Wilson, Ted Reynolds, John Hoey, Mona Randel, Harry Kimball, Melissa Walker, John Couvrette, Dave Graul, Tom Halfaker, and Deric Merino
A heartfelt THANK YOU to all our fellow Kiwanians for bringing energy, joy, and community spirit to this fantastic event!

On April 19, the Kiwanis Club of Poway gathered at the scenic Lake Poway for their annual volunteer park cleanup, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to community service. With gloves on and trash bags in hand, volunteers of all ages worked together to restore the natural beauty of the park, ensuring that visitors can continue to enjoy its trails, picnic areas, and serene waterfront. The event was more than just a cleanup—it was a celebration of civic pride, teamwork, and the shared goal of preserving Poway’s outdoor spaces for future generations.
Last week’s Poway Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was a fantastic success, and we were honored to be recognized as the nonprofit beneficiary of a portion of the event’s net proceeds. In return, our dedicated volunteers stepped up to assist with registration and bring some extra fun to the 3rd tee.
A huge shoutout to Bill Watson, Les Smith, Lisa Lingham, John Lingham, Melissa Walker, Harry Kimball, Kevin Griffith, Beth Galloway, Neil Tarzy, John Faustino, Ken Post, John Couvrette, Lynn Beavers, and ELLEN STARR, who served as the 3rd tee coach, award presenter, and photographer. Your enthusiasm and support made the day even more special!
It was a beautiful day on the course, and the Chamber truly appreciated the helping hands.
Speaking of the 3rd tee, we hosted the Marshmallow Driving Contest, and let’s just say—it was hilarious! Who knew there were so many ways to send a marshmallow flying? The photos say it all: Lynn holding a marshmallow stuck to a tee, and John channeling his inner Happy Gilmore in an attempt to launch his fluffy projectile.
From teamwork to laughter, this event embodied community spirit and generosity. We’re grateful to the Chamber for their support, and to everyone who made the day memorable. Looking forward to next year!
The Kiwanis Club of Poway has long been a pillar of community service, fostering leadership and volunteerism through various events and programs. Among its many contributions, the Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant stands out as a cherished tradition that empowers young women, instilling confidence and poise while providing scholarship opportunities. With the dedication of Kiwanians and local volunteers, the event continues to make a lasting impact on participants and the broader community.
The 2025 Miss Poway Scholarship Pageant was a spectacular success, thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and the vision of Pageant Director Kayla Locher. After years of committed leadership, Kayla bid farewell to her role, leaving behind a well-trained team to carry on the legacy. The pageant featured 23 outstanding contestants, each bringing unique talents and aspirations to the stage. The newly crowned Court wasted no time stepping into their roles, making their first public appearance on KUSI less than a day after their coronation.
Beyond the excitement of the competition, the event was a testament to the spirit of collaboration and generosity that defines the Kiwanis Club of Poway. With judges, rodeo helpers, and fellow Kiwanians all playing a part, the pageant showcased the power of community involvement. As the newly crowned representatives begin their year of service, they will continue to inspire others through leadership, outreach, and advocacy—ensuring that Miss Poway remains a symbol of excellence and civic pride for years to come.
Despite a rainy evening, the Poway Kiwanis Club had an incredible turnout for a memorable meeting filled with inspiring moments and exciting milestones.
One of the evening’s highlights was a remarkable presentation from Lori Grennan from Preserve Wild Poway (https://www.preservewildpoway.org/), who captivated attendees with her insights on preserving Poway’s native habitat. She shared valuable information on protecting the region’s diverse flora and fauna, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts in maintaining our community’s natural beauty for generations to come.
Adding to the excitement of the evening, Ginger Couvrette, a member of the Poway Community Foundation (https://www.powaycommunityfoundation.org/), presented the club with a generous $10,000 donation. This substantial contribution is a testament to the Foundation’s commitment to supporting impactful community initiatives. The funds will play a vital role in furthering the club’s mission of service and creating meaningful change in Poway.
What a TEAM of wild Kiwanians serving the Little Leaguers, families….. and of course having fun!
Another successful event due to some very hard working Kiwanis members, Miss Poway Court princesses, and even upcoming Pageant Contestants! Of course we couldn’t do it without Johnny Pancake Lingham providing the batter, Ken Post who donated to the Poway American Little League to cover our grill fee!
